'Spalting' marks the bold and haunting debut release from w. baer, an alias of Burbank, California artist Wyatt Baer. Titled after the process of wood coloration caused by fungi that’s primarily found in dead trees, this decaying process conceptually seeps into the album’s seven tracks.
Immersed in an anxious, unpredictable energy that blooms with moments of stunning beauty, 'Spalting' is a dynamic, emotionally charged journey. A reckless sonic catharsis drives the production. Gauzy deconstructed and distorted beats storm through claustrophobic textures, while evocative shards of distorted vocal samples emerge out of the dark shadows to gasp for air. A thrillingly suffocating sound that finds inspiration in contemporaries such as Kid Smpl, Forest Swords, Burial, MssingNo, and Noah "40" Shebib, w. baer's first offering balances dark with a glimmer of light, providing a glimpse of ambivalent hope at the end of the tunnel. Dissonance is rarely this beautiful.
