Combining live instrumentation with electronic processes, Walrus Ghost, the alias of Brooklyn-based musician Christian Banks, carves out a homespun vision of instrumental post-rock shaped by and inflected with ambient, folk, electronica, and lo-fi rock. After a debut full length with Berlin-based label Project Mooncircle in 2014, and a follow-up collaborative album with jazz guitarist Max Frankl released by Hush Hush Records in 2018, Banks took a hiatus from releasing music while dealing with various health issues. Persevering through these struggles, he remained creatively focused and continued to record in his home studio over the next few years. Banks returns to Hush Hush Records with the culmination of that hard work and dedication, his second solo full-length album, ‘If You Could Be Here Now.’
A thoughtful, emotionally resonant album, 'If You Could Be Here Now' builds a sonic landscape that explores memory, nostalgia, and human connection. Layers of melodies and textures blend with hazy tape manipulation and journal-like field recordings. Lush guitars and warm instrumental arrangements carry throughout, as drums drive energetic tensions that build and collapse, thriving on atmosphere. Every track stands alone delicately and intently curated; but the edges of these songs also blur together, each piece being a part of a larger narrative. From start to finish, the album is well crafted, personal, and deeply expressive.
